Hi! I graduated Syracuse in 2000. Loved it :)
I'm going to South Africa on May 9th. I'm so excited! I just joined this site and hope to connect to some others who are going then. Have an amazing time in Tanzania! Would love to hear how it goes.
That sounds awesome that you are teaching overseas...I'll have to talk to you about that when we are there because I am an elementary education major. I booked my flights this week! It really is coming up quickly...
With immunizations i just gave the clinic my insurance card and all of my immunizations were mostly covered and i ended up paying less than $100. Most clinics also accept student insurance. hope this helps!
Yeah, I have been talking to a travel agent too. I hope I can find something lower priced! I am fundraising for my trip so I have been gradually raising money for it. I hope to be placed working with children but I'm up for anything! You?
Yeah! It seems like a lot of people are at the other homebase in Moshi? Have you figured out your flights and everything? I've been working on it lately...
Hey! I will be in at the Karanga home base. which one are you at?

I have not found out my homebase yet! Where are you staying? That would be great if we did. I am so excited and I think this community site they started is awesome!
Hi! I'm not sure what home base we will be at yet...I just registered yesterday, so I'm sure I will find out soon. Hopefully we will cross paths--have a wonderful holiday!
yeah if you can scrounge up the money then definitely go to Zanzibar, it looked amazing. The weather was rainy and cool while we were there, which was a bit out of season. Usually by then the rainy season is done, but it seemed to rain almost every morning that we were there. By the afternoon it almost always cleared up and was alright. It was cool enough that you should bring some pants and a hoodie or a rain jacket, but even on the cooler days the humidity was fairly warm. We'd walk from the home base to the highway supermarket and even though it was cooler out we'd always feel hot and sticky by the end. So yeah...bring pants and long skirts. I wore skirts everyday to placement, most places really prefer it. I also wore thin long sleeve dress shirts mostly. But it is usually dusty and muddy so don't bring white unless you want to get rid of it. Before I left home I went to the thrift store and bought a ton of long skirts and dress shirts and then when I left Tanzania I just gave it all away to some of the ladies who cleaned the yard at the school and some of it to the staff at Kili lodge. That way I had room for souveniers in my suitcase!!!!!!!!!! Definitely bring some pants and casual stuff for safari/weekend trips though.
awww yay!! I was in the Karanga base. It is really nice (check out my pics, the house is there!) And the staff are AMAZING, honestly. The food is pretty good and it is buffet style so if you don't like something you don't have to take it! The weekends were amazing, we were able to go on a weekend safari, once you get there just ask the older volunteers who they went with, and try to organize one with your whole group right away. The more people you get to go the better rate you get. There are a lot of good safari companies in the area and it should cost only 300 dollars for a weekend safari to Ngorngoro crater and Lake Manyara. We saw every animal imagineable, we had the best luck. Not everyone does, but you're pretty much guaranteed to at least see giraffes and elephants.
A lot of people organized Zanzibar weekend trips too which the photos and stories looked amazing from, I didn't go though because it was around 800 US dollars which is kind of a lot....
I was only at CCS for three weeks but I was in Tanzania a bit longer than that. We went and stayed up at Mount Kilimanjaro View Lodge for a week or so. It was AMAZING. If you are not going to climb kili I reccomend going there for sure. It is 2,800 metres up the mountain (clouds are at your level!!!) and it is breathtaking. Check them out online, just google Mt.Kilimanjaro View Lodge. A few people from our group did a weekend trip there also, and had an amazing time. Just email him before you leave. I reccomend it, the staff will do anything for you, like go hiking in the forest looking for monkeys, stay up all night to tell you stories while you watch the sunrise etc. etc. Check their site out.
Um yeah I don't know what else to say...
practice your swahili...you can get by without a lot but the more you have the better of an experience you will have overall. Anything else you wanted to ask??
Hi!!! Thanks for checking out my videos! I was teaching at a nursery school with children aged 3-7. It was an amazing experience!!!!! If you put that you want to teach you will probably get to because there are a lot of teaching positions generally. Just go into it knowing that it will not be like teaching here, things are much different, the expectations are different, a lot of the teachers still use a stick to discipline. The children are just so excited to have you though, and it is so much fun. You just have to have an open mind and an open heart and you will do well. Where in Tanzania are you going? Do you know what house you are in yet? I'm so excited for you!!! The people in Tanzania were the warmest, sweetest, most amazing people I have ever met in my life!
Many , many thanks for this blog of yours Emily. Taking photos in another cultural environment does require a lot of sensability, and respect of the individuals which you want in your shot. To often over the years, I have seen volunteers taking ph...
