Profile Information

About me:
I am 23 years old, I attended Texas Tech University for 2 years and now I am currently at the University of North Texas. I am majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies (EC-6) and plan to get my masters in Administration. I get my love for teaching and children from my mom who was a long time educator. I knew I wanted to go to Africa and volunteer at a young age. I am a little nervous since I will be traveling alone, but I am also really excited for the experience. I have never been anywhere like this and I am counting down the days! : )

p.s. I am at the Moshi homebase!

Mambo Whitney. An International plan may work but it is cheaper for you to buy a phone in Tanzania. With a local phone you are not charged for incoming calls and messages. It works out better for you. You may worry what to do with the phone at the end of your program but I am sure an incoming volunteer would be glad to buy your phone.
The phone would cost you $ 40 and you then buy pre-paid airtime which you use as you go.

it may work depending on your phone company but it's very expensive.
much cheaper to make calls from the local internet cafe, or through skype, or to buy a cell phone there and use pay as you go SIM cards.

hey whitney. i was there for three weeks and i brought 5 skirts and 5 capri pants. i had prob about 10 -15 tops (some for placement, some for sleep, some for whatever). i wore some outfits several times before doing laundry because laundry got to be a nuisance. i did laundry 3 times within the first week and a half. I say bring underwear for everyday (some ppl bought several of the cheap hanes packs )and a week or two worth or clothes and you should be set. the skirt situaution depends on your placement. if you work at an orphanage you can wear pants. i suggest bringing at least one skirt because we ended up having to dress nicely to go to a court room in arusha. we sat in on a trial on the rwandan genocide and you need to look presentable at court. if you are in tz for a hile i suggest getting skirts made. many ppl did this as opposed to wearing the ones from home. this can be time consuming though.
