Home again

I miss writing a blog so I thought I would do one last one about being home again. It was a very long trip back but went smoothly. It was strange to leave Tanzania and walk into Amsterdam airport and see Christmas trees and decorations. I had a wonderful welcome at the Rochester airport. My family was away so my dad, stepmother, and neighbors greeted me with flowers and signs that the kids had made. It was really great to see them. We had dinner together and I tortured everyone with 750 photos!… Continue

Kwa heri (good bye)

I can't believe I am leaving today. This has been an absolutely wonderful trip. I am so excited to see you all back at home though.

The short rainy season has begun here. Yesterday morning it was pouring on our van ride to our placements. The roads were just rivers of mud. We got stuck while trying to get across one area. 4 of us got out and pushed in the mud and pouring rain. We got the van unstuck but then realized we were all stuck on the wrong side of the water! My friend Jean and I hiked u… Continue

matembezi (adventure)

I love hearing from you all. I'm glad Halloween went well. I was thinking of everyone and am sooooooo excited for a Recess peanut butter cup! All of the people here are hoping that Obama will win. People really keep up with US politics. We will be able to find out tomorrow morning who won. We all have our fingers crossed! I think the whole continent does.

Saturday my friend Janice and I (and our guide Bakari) hiked up to the first base camp on Kilimanjaro. It took us 4 hours up and 2 1/2 down.… Continue

samaki (fish)

Hi everyone! I am feeling better. The fish song was a hit. It is so interesting how we really have to be so creative here to plan lessons because we don't have materials. People are saving everything to use like water bottles, bottle caps and toilet paper rolls. I used some skirt material as a parachute to play a game yesterday.

I went out to dinner for the first time a couple of nights ago. We went to an Italian/Indian place. Interesting combination huh. It was very nice to be out. As we sat t… Continue

twiga (giraffe)

Well we just got back from safari tonight. We are all very tired but had a great time. Before I tell you about it I have to say I am a little homesick this weekend. I miss you all at home! Still love being here though but am thinking of you. My tummy has also been a little funny and I can't really eat too much the last couple of days. Could be much worse though!

So two days of safari. We, of course, saw lots of animals. My favorites were the giraffes and the elephants. We also saw warthogs, wat… Continue

Actually I'm thinking about Bagamoyo or rural Kilimanjaro... I haven't had enough of Tanzania yet. Plus, now that I know a little Swahili, I'd like to use it!! I haven't checked out your pics yet but I've heard there are some good ones. Marisol is coming to Boston the first weekend in December - want to join us for a reunion?? Miss ya, Dada, Janice

Hey-
While you try to figure out Africa, I'll try to figure out this website :)
Not sure where to leave notes for you (and the world at large which I think I just did "5 minutes ago" as well as joining as member 1665 of the community- not sure how that actually happened. All is well here, keep telling us what you're doing as we're trying to follow along (through the Rochester library system :) on your travels and adventures ).
Love, US

Hi Trista,
Not too much excitement here. Went out to brunch, took a walk, did lawn work & ate lots of candy corns. Can't compete with monkeys, banana trees & safaris! Be careful what you say in Swahili! How is sleeping under a mosquito net? Tapp said she is going to get me a watch & set it to your time cuz I keep counting on my fingers to see what time it is in Tanzania! I think you must be asleep right now. Sweet dreams. XO Mom

Hujambo to you! (I'm guessing that's hi or something like that)
It's 9:30 AM here so must be about 4:30 PM there. I wish you had a transmitter camera on your forehead so I could see what you are seeing! It must be so exciting! Glad you had safe & easy travel! Did you find the other volunteers in Amsterdam? Is today a settle in & get acquainted day? Then on to your placement tomorrow? We closed up Birdland yesterday, luckily weather was sunny even tho chilly. KD took Derby for us, & he had a ball discovering horses & "horse pies." Nothing too exciting planned for today. We have to get all of our excitement thru you! I'll try your personal email later so let me know if it works. Look forward to reading about your adventures!
