I volunteered in Russia a couple of years ago in winter. Make sure you take lots of warm clothes, but especially try to get some good shoes that will keep your feet warm and are easy to walk in. Going for a walk is really difficult if you don't have good shoes as the sidewalks are not cleared like they are in the US.
On the other hand, indoors are over heated, so you can wear light clothes there.
Have a fantastic time. Remember to keep an open mind and smile as much as possible, The kids and the staff are incredible.
