Sounds like you are having a lovely experience. I spent time in Guatemala city, also, and it was clearly one of the greatest things I've ever done. Lake Atitlan is pretty amazing, but do not miss Tikal!!! It is very stunningly beautiful. I'm very ...

I'm so happy to read about your experiences, Pippa! It sounds challenging but so rewarding, and I agree that the Guatemalan people are so friendly and welcoming. I hope you continue to enjoy your time there!

Profile Information

About me:
I studied Sport Science and Physiology at University of Leeds, and graduated in 2007. During this time I spent my summers working a kids camp in Vermont, and spent four wonderful summers there in total. People I met there inspired me to Volunteer over seas and I'm so grateful for their influence.
I recently studied Public Relations and Event management in London and would like to channel this into non profit organisations.
I love traveling and learning about different cultures. I am currently (not so patiently) waiting to start my Volunteer placement in Guatemala City, April 18th! After learning German at school I decided it was important for me to learn Spanish., so I am studying 3 hours a day and hope it helps!

Reflection

I was sitting in Central Park during my trip to visit friends, and suddenly I realise that this trip is the start of so many new things. My life hit a stand still for a short while after i got back from Guatemala and I was confused of which path to take. Being away from home again here has given me time and space to work out what is next.

I look back on Guatemala with such fond memories and I am so grateful for the new perspective it has given me of the world and of myself, even if I'm still wo… Continue

Guatemala continued

I have only 3 weeks left in Guatemala and not much time left with the children. My time here has gone by so quickly, I can't imagine saying good bye. I believe that will be the most challenging part of the trip, not being able to say "hasta lunes" see you monday.

Santa Sofia de Jesus the school I work at, is such a wonderful opportunity for children with learning difficulties, but it's sad that it has to be private because the government don't support education of this kind in Guatemala. As I s… Continue

Guatemala

I had promised myself and others that I would blog whilst being away but it's just been so difficult to find time to spend behind the computer. After almost three weeks in Guatemala city here goes.

I want to tell you about my weekend just gone. It's midnight in Guatemala and I am in line for the toilet in a petrol station that is full to bursting of Guatemalan travellers on their way somewhere away from the city for the bank holiday weekend. I'm standing behind lots of women and I start to wond… Continue

Hello Philippa! I hope you remember me, I was your first Program Manager, before Alex took over. I'm so happy I just read through your blog. It sounds like you had a tremendous experience, and I'm just thrilled it was everything you'd hoped for! I can't wait to hear about your upcoming experience as well, working with Native Americans!

Now for an ironic favor- the tables have turn, I suppose! I'm heading to Guatemala City in 3 weeks to volunteer for 6 weeks, and as you can imagine, I am so excited. I talked about it for so long, but have never been myself! SO, my request for you is: please give me any advice you can! I have told Virginia I'd love to work at Guirola in the afternoons, and during the morning I'll do anything she'd like.

I'd love tips on working at the orphanage in the afternoons, anything you wish you'd known before going, which weekend trips were the best, etc.

Thank you so much, in advance!
Janelle

Hello Philippa,

Thank you for your continued interest in Cross-Cultural Solutions! It sounds like you had a wonderful time on the Guatemala Program.

At this time, there are no immediate openings in the UK or US. It is important to realize that to work in our US office, you must have official documentation for employment (CCS is not in position to sponsor staff at this juncture).

Should job openings be confirmed in the UK, I would be in touch with you about scheduling a time to discuss your interests, availability and specifics about the positions.

Once again, thank you for staying connected to CCS.

All the best,
Quinn

Philippa: I have read your blog posts as I will be going to Guatemala City on June 27. I really enjoyed reading about your experiences!

I have a question for you... hope you don't mind! What do most females wear when they are not at their placements in Guatemala City? Say, for example, during free time when you can explore the city or travel on the weekends? Are shorts appropriate? Thanks!

CCS is a great organisation to work for and they enable me to continue to volunteer abroad which is fantastic. You are going to have a great time in Guatemala City - I have heard great things about that program.
