Ayacucho is perfectly safe- in a group or on your own, provided you are sensible about carrying money and not flashing valuables- but that goes for every city in the world!! Shining Path is in the past- the people of Ayacucho and Peru will never l...

Ayacucho Safety

I am looking into doing an intership program in Ayacucho, Peru (staying for 12 weeks) and was just wondering about the safety issues, ie: guerrilla warfare, Shining Paths. Also, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience doing a health clinic internship in Ayacucho? I would love to hear thoughts/stories.

Hey Maggie,

Thankyou so much for your message. That's brilliant, I look forward to meeting you as it looks like we'll be doing the same placement at around the same time. I'm really looking forward to it and it's great to hear from others that will be doing the same thing. I'm currently living and working in Leeds, England as a doctor but taking a year sabbatical to volunteer and travel. My plans are to head over to Ayacucho Aug 30th and spend 9 wks volunteering and then another 3 months travelling around South America eventually heading up to Central America, out to Fuji and then over to NewZealand to work. I'm hoping that I'll be able to get a group of us who are all interested in travelling around Peru and South America in general as I am travelling on my own. Let me know if you plan to visit any particular places and need some extra numbers. Also, I would really like to climb Machu Picchu whilst on the volunteer project so if your interested...??

Anyway, keep in touch

Ayacucho is AMAZING and a wonderful place to use you skills to help others. It is not necessary that you have any medical background, but it is def. helpful! I was certified as an instructor for CPR and First Aid when i went and they are great to have, but not necessary. (I actually performed the compressions onf CPR on a premature baby that was born in out clinic, and it was a life changing event to see the baby survive). I was only in Ayacucho for 5 weeks and then traveled for my 6th week. I would def. NOt stay any less than 6 weeks if you really want to get to work in the clinics. The first 2-3 weeks I worked with the nurses going around town giving vaccines and doing check-ups at public schools before I started working more in obstetrics.
11 weeks would give you an amazing opportunity to really get to know the people you are working with and obtain their trust to work in various fields. Also, the longer you are there the more you are able to do because the more you understand how the clinic you are placed at works. Do you have a strong background in Spanish?.. It is not required, but def. helps a LOT! This is the most difficult barrier to overcome when interacting with the people in Ayacucho. I would highly recommend refreshing your Spanish before you go, becuase it will give you the advantage working in the clinics because you can not only communicate with the doctors and nurses, but also all the patients. (and if your Spanish is weak, no worries because that is what they are used to from the volunteers... it will improve 100-fold while you are there).
Are you still in school at the University of Colorado? I am currently living in Breckenridge, CO :-)
