Hi everyone! I am really interesting in volunteering this summer, I'm just not sure where yet. My mom is under the impression that the area in Brazil where CCS is is not the safe. Has anyone been there and have any comments about their experiences...

Hey Lindsay-
The area that the homebase is located in is very safe. In fact, it is located near some of the middle class (which in Brazil really is more upper-class) homes. And you're right near the beach too. I walked outside of the house a couple of the times down the street alone (during the day) to get stuff and never once felt unsafe. I also ran by myself during the day and never felt unsafe running. I wouldn't suggest going out at night alone, obviously, especially if you are not fluent in the language.
I worked in a favela - the poorest of the poor - and I was the only person volunteering there, so I had to walk in and out everyday alone and even there I never once felt unsafe.

Hi Lindsay, I saw your post on CCS Brazil and just wanted to give you a little insight. First and foremost you can assure your mom that you will be safe. The neighborhood where the CCS house is located is a middle class neighborhood, the house is gated, and there is a guard around the clock. So you have no worries there. As for some of the volunteer sites, those neighborhoods can be a bite shady, but CCS provides transportation to and from, and the driver waits until you enter into your site before he leaves, and is always on time picking you up. CCS provides you with general rules to follow when out and about. For example, it is a rule of thumb to not carry a purse, go anywhere alone, etc. Basically, you don't want to "look like a tourist". I didn't really have this problem because of my ethnicity, so I look much like the people of Salvador. lol. And CCS also provides Portuguese classes which are very helpful in getting around. I encourage everyone to take advantage of that and make an effort to speak the language of the people. They'll appreciate the effort you make. Well, that's a mouthful. I will tell you that Salvador is a magical place. It's the only place I've ever been where the urge to want to return increases as more time passes. Tchua Tchua and good luck!

hey lindsay! i'm going to brazil this summer from june 27-august 1st.... i've talked to a bunch of previous volunteers & was concerned about safety as well- i'm under the impression that i'll always be with other volunteers/ provided with safe transportation to and from the work sites.
i'm also planning on working with kids!!! i'm so SO excited about this summer... let me know what you decide- i hope you decide to do it!!

Hi Lindsay! I saw your comment on the Brasil Group! Saying that I loved volunteering in Brasil would be a complete understatement. I just got back from there 2 weeks ago, I spent 4 weeks in Salvador and it was AMAZING! I worked at Frutos de Maes, which is a school for less fortunate kids, we planned activities for them, played outside, feed them, bathed them etc... I loved my kids sooo much! I miss them like CRAZY! In regards to it being safe, its no different then going anywhere else, you have to be cautious of certain areas but the homebase is in a super safe location with a security guard who is always there. Its rare that you will ever go anywhere alone, you always seem to travel with the other volunteers. I loved it soooo much that I am actually going back in December! The culture and people are beautiful! I really wish you luck with your decision!

Hey Lindsay! I saw your comment on the Brazil group. I loved my experience in Brazil. I was there for 8 weeks. I also lived in Salvador previously for a few years. Salvador has dangerous neighborhoods but the CCS house is located in a really nice neighborhood. Also they have drivers that take you to the placements. I got to see most of the placements since I was there so long. I worked the most at a school called CEIFAR. I taught English and also worked in a classroom of 6 year olds. My wife worked at CASAAH which is a center for kids with HIV or AIDS. I miss those kids a ton! If you have any specific questions, let me know. Since I used to live in Salvador I know the area pretty well and spent 2 months volunteering with CCS. Good luck on your decision.
