I was in Quetzaltenango on the Insight program for a week, and I LOVED it! I never realized what an amazing country Guatemala is. I learned so much about the people and culture while i was there. I loved the staff and the food was soooo good!

Farewell South Africa!

So I just got back home from South Africa yesterday. The plane rides went surprisingly well, and all of my luggage arrived with me, which I was really happy about. Now that I’m home and actually have some time to write, and unlimited bandwidth to post pictures, that’s just what I’ll do!

I spent my last week in South Africa just soaking everything in for the last time. I already miss the beauty of my surroundings in Robertson. (This concrete, brick building, city atmosphere just doesn’t cut it.)… Continue

I'm making progress!

So yesterday at the farm school, the secretary called in sick, so the principal asked me to fill in for her. I was a little nervous because that meant I’d have to answer the phone which I’ve been trying to avoid all this time. The reason why I’ve been avoiding it was because I didn’t know how to pronounce the school’s name. It’s just really difficult, but after having the principal repeat it about 20 times, I got the gist of it. So of course right as soon as she leaves the office, the phone ring… Continue

I’m number one!

"Number one” being the first volunteer ever at the farm school in Robertson. It’s really a unique position to be in and I’m loving it. There are about 140 students at the school that range in ages five through 14. All of the kids speak Afrikaans and very little English. They definitely understand more than they speak. It’s probably because they’re more shy and embarrassed than anything. There are only four classrooms for all these kids and one teacher for each class. So you can just imagine how… Continue

Best place on earth!

I’m in Robertson! Ok so I’ve been here for over a week now, and just have not had any time to start this blog until now (plus we haven't had any internet). I love it here! We are surrounding by endless mountains and just so much greenery; it’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s so serene and majestic. I feel so lucky to be a volunteer here. The Home-Base is amazing. We’re on a nature reserve, so we’re just surrounded by all this land, and even some small animals. The coolest one that I’ve seen on the Hom… Continue

A Very Successful Insight Abroad Project!

I meant to write a lot more while I was actually in Costa Rica, but I really didn't have the time. We were kept pretty busy between volunteering, Cultural & Learning Activities, field trips, and just getting to know San Carlos. Needless to say, our trip was fantastic, and i really couldn't have asked for more. Our Insight project was so successful. Between the six volunteers and Greivin (the CCS staff member that was with us at our placement), we really accomplished so much. We managed to pa… Continue

Have you volunteered a lot before?
