Profile Information

About me:
I graduated in '07 from Miami University of Ohio with a degree in music. While I was there I did a senior capstone project on the effects of oppressive african governments on the evolution of certain music styles. I became extremely interested in South Africa and the stories of Apartheid and how artists like Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo came out of that time.

After college I got a job as a Marketing Coordinator for Jazz/Classical/Blues/Rock/World record company called Telarc/Heads Up International. Coincidentally they had all of the South African artists on the label that I studied back in college. Unfortunately, after 2 years our company downsized and laid off half of the employees, including myself.

I've always wanted to travel to South Africa ever since. Now I feel like I've found an amazing opportunity to experience the culture first hand and be apart of a great cause.

Hey I just logged in to the CCS community and realized you had friended me. Congrats on deciding to volunteer. You'll love Cape Town. I still miss it and hope to go back and visit those who impacted me. Do you have any questions? I see you're volunteer date is quickly approaching. You can check out my blog from my travels there at http://southafricaccs.katdavis.net. There is a link there to see my pictures.

well, I will definitely check it out. I can appreciate when two genres are melted together or when one (such as this case, from the sound of it) is emulated by a means not usual for its style. cool stuff. the new album by The Field actually features more live drums/bass. The end result can be pretty cool. I went and saw a German electronica band by the name of Moderat (they consist of two fabulous German acts: Modeselektor and Apparat) outside of Vienna a few weeks ago. They blend a lot of straight up Dancehall beats, fat synth basses with a lot of spacey pads and electric guitar. The live performance was pretty sick, too. Two guys on samples and one guy playing synths, guitar, and doing the occasional vocals. Don't know if they'd be interesting for you, but they're a wonderful example of electronica done differently. Love that stuff.
You into ambient music at all? If so, and you don't already know of this album, check out Riceboy Sleeps (singer of Sigur Rós and another guy). BEAUTIFUL instrumental ambient works. Lots of interesting samples mixed with piano/strings, synth drones... a musical highlight of 2009 for sure. Anyways, I'll let you know what I think of Tortured Soul. have a good one,

From Here We Go Sublime is one of the most epic techno records I have ever heard, and the song "Silent" alone makes that album worth the purchase, in my opinion. Glad you're diggin' it! I'll have to check out Tortured Soul. Can't say I'm the hugest fan of Soul-esque House/Techno, but it's always worth a shot! Ahhh..so refreshing to know I'll have someone I can talk music with in CPT (that's Capetown, by the way- not NWA for "Compton", in case you were wondering.)
peace,
m

haha very true. I'm more excited than I am nervous..I just don't like being alone, ya know? And I know theres tons of other volunteers but not that I know..so it feels like I'm going to be alone. I'm sure once I'm there I will be fine, just the pre-trip nerves kicking in =]

ahhhh, yes, I am not all too familiar with Tortured Soul, but I know Kraak and Smaak. I am likewise pretty big into techno. One techno artist that has been heading up the charts with me recently is a Swedish artist who goes by the name of The Field. If you're looking for some nice, rich textured synth/sample work with subtle yet driving minimal beats, that's your guy. Amazing stuff. I think you and I could probably go on for hours recommending music to one another. Look forward to doing that some more!

nice, man. one of my sisters and her husband live in Frankfurt. I was wondering if there might be any German or potentially even Austrian in your lineage. Gschwend sounds very Austrian, actually (maybe Swiss....whatever).
I myself am a drummer, but am big into synthesizers and all other things that could potentially make pretty sounds and noises. I play drums for my band but do a lot of synth-work and programming together with the rest of the guys, too.
I am not at all familiar with the South African music scene or its history, so you can feel free to be my tour guide in regards to that. I am more the rock/ambient/electronic "connoisseur" (if you will :) ). Anyways, look forward to meeting you, man! Take care,

Matthew

haha well, my parents aren't too cool with it..they are actually still trying to talk me out of it. They support me and hope I have a great experience but they, to put it bluntly, think I'll die. That sucks about your job, everyone seems to be getting laid off these days. Sorry about that! This economy does suck..I'm actually curious if things are going to change while were in Cape Town, that would be funny to come back and have stuff a little better (hopefully not worse..). I just want to go now, I get way too excited for things. Seriously, the past month I've been feeling like a 6 year old waiting to open presents on Christmas morning! lol
