Karen MacCaskill's Blog - South Africa – my day at the Khayalitsha Clinic!

I've spent the past days in the local Khayalitsha township clinic which was an experience of a lifetime!!! Words can not begin to explain what I witnessed but I will attempt to share just a few thoughts.
As I've mentioned the Fikela Children's Center houses 28 children, all of whom regularly attend this clinic or a local hospital such as the Red Cross for miscellaneous treatments. Over the course of my stay, I have learn… Continue

Karen MacCaskill's 2nd Blog - My days and relationships at Fikelela!

I've completed my second week of volunteering at the Fikelela Children's Center. Thier vision is to care for abandoned and orphaned children. First they nurse the kids back to health, emotionally and physically and place them onto anti-retrovirals where necessary if they have the HIV virus. Secondly, the children are placed back into the community with screened, trained and monitored foster parents. At present there are 28 chi… Continue

Karen MacCaskill - My heart is split WIDE OPEN! My first 10 days in South Africa!

I arrived safely after 38 hours of flying, 5 plane rides and no baggage! Luckily my hotel was very accomodating and my cab driver took me back out to the airport on Sat. to retrieve my bags and deliver me to the Cross Cultural Solutions Homebase located in Rosebank, S. Africa. Whew!

Throughout the day on Saturday the other volunteers arrived and we befriended one another pretty quickly. The group consists of 28 volunteers comprised of mostly 20-26 year old young accomplished women, a few guys i… Continue

Hi! I'm going to be in Cape Town from July 11th until October, can I just tell you that I cried reading your blog. Honestly, I wanted to learn more about everything and your blogs really did help me a lot-and I cannot wait to experience this myself. If you have any advice, please let me know. I'm only 18 years old and have never been anywhere outside of the Chicago area without my parents, so as you might imagine, I'm a bit nervous. =]

Yeah it looks like I'm at the sarah fox children's hospital. I'm very happy with the placement but curious about what they will be having us do there. Working with orphans with hiv/aids sounds really rewarding too but that's a bummer about the other placement.. did they say why it didn't work out?

Hi Karen! It looks like we will be staying the same amount of time in South Africa.. 6 weeks! I'm trying to pack right now but am having a little trouble judging how much to bring. Do you know how many bags you are taking? Also, have you found any information about the gym? And did you get your placement figured out? I'm getting so excited for the trip .. I can't believe it's only 5 days away! Can't wait to meet you!

I went on a safari at Fairy Glen Game Reserve. I think it was a good choice, if you don't have the time or money to go to Krueger. We saw tons of animals, and for a little extra they will come pick you up at the homebase so you don't have to worry about transportation.

Perfect - thanks for this great information! Your photos are soooooo fun! I really am so excited to find out my placement and depart on March 4th!!! Thanks again for the hotel suggestion.

There is a B & B in Rondebosch (within walking distance from the homebase) called Little Scotia. www.scotia.co.za/
I don't remember the name of the gym, but you can get that from the homebase. I stayed at the homebase in Rosebank, which is 3 Hermitage. From what I've heard they only have 2 when it's needed, at the really busy times.

Hi Karen... ZA was an amazing experience. Let me know if you have a specific questions. I wouldn't know where to start. :) Just try to squeeze as much in as possible during your free time, and experience as much of Cape town as possible.

This is a link for a travel size yoga mat. I saw you're a fellow yogini and thought you might be interested! I know a few other people are planning on morning yoga sessions!

I'll be in South Africa when you arrive, can't wait to meet you! Enjoy the holidays!

My partner and I will be in South Africa from 3/7-28. How nice to learn that you will be there at the same time. We plan to pack light since we hope to do some touring before our volunteer experience. While we do yoga, it is "Level 1". I would be interested to hear if you find a thin packable mat. Not planning to take a laptop--we'll use the internet cafe nearby.
