I absolutely loved Kilimahewa. While there are a lot of children, I usually had around 20 in my class, and they spoke very little (almost no) English you are able to get more than you would think accomplished. I will admit that it seemed overwhelming at first but I just took a step back one afternoon afterwards and came up with a game plan for my time plan, which I found to be very helpful. I found making worksheets for what you're trying to teach to be useful and allow you to spend time with each child individually. I would also have them come up to the board and do fun arts and crafts with them. It's also fun getting time to play with the kids from the different classes during their lunch time. One thing I can say is that you will pick up on Swahili very quickly =) I also found it helpful to ask about different phrases during Swahili lessons that I needed to use, that way you learn and get to use it so the kids pay attention to you =) Let me know if you have any questions, you can e-mail me at ajpython@gwu.edu, and I'm SO jealous, I wish I could be heading back there!!!
You will be challenged, but, as an experienced volunteer, it won't be beyond your ability. I'd love to talk to you to tell you what I did the two times I was there. If you want to give me a call this weekend I'll be around most of the time - or you can leave your number and I'll call you back. I'm in CT. 203 268-8751
