Hey Janelle,

Sorry it took me such a long time to respond, this semester has been very hectic.

Thailand was in one word, unbelievable. I met the most amazing people, the most inspiring kids, and the most friendly environment. I will never forget it, as it has forever changed my life and perspectives. Thank you for the opportunity and I look forward to continuing my volunteer work around the world.

How have you been? As I remember, that was your last Thailand programme?

I hope to hear from you soon. Take care!

Sincerely,
Rafa

Hey Janelle,

I am sorry it's taken so long to reply. I'm currently working with children on a reservation in South Dakota, so you can imagine I get easily distracted.
I am so glad you are going to Guatemala. This is a wonderful place, and the people there have hearts of gold.

From what I remember you spoke Spanish so that will help you build wonderful relationships. People there seem to be more reserved and even with my limited Spanish I was always the one making the first move with regards to communication.

The kids at Guirola are wonderful and in the afternoons I just took things from the activity closet at the house and brought them round. They love to draw with you, and they really liked the flash cards. I'm struggling with names right now as I try to remember the names of the kids I am working with but there are activities that you can do with most. Gerado for example is very capable and likes to help you with things and joke around with you,
Cessy (I can't remember the spelling), loves colouring. There were times I felt too tierd to go to Guirola but I tried my best to get there becase upon a arrival the kids re boot your energy.

Make sure at the weekend you get to tikkal and lago Atitlan, stay at Los Amigos hostel in flores (by tikkal), and find a hotel or hostel when you get to the lake, there are plenty. Visit San Marcos and San Pedro by the lake.
I did my best to get to know people in Guatemala, I smiled at everyone who wanted a smile, (obviously without causing myself danger).

Iknow you know that an open mind and heart are the best tools, so just enjoy Guatemala and say hello to everyone for me. The in country staff looked after me well and I made great friendships there.

Have fun and if you have any more questions about anything let me know. I did extensive travelling around after so I have lots of places and hostels to recommend

Hi Janelle,
Many thanks for the comment. We were just talking about you the other day as I met with Stephen Thompson here in Delhi. He was just mentionning to me that you were off to Guatemala. I am sure you will like it very much. I spent 5 months a few years ago working with two different Ngos over there in Guatemala City and Xela... I look forward to hear about your experience overthere and wish you all the best.

Janelle,

What's up? Thought I'd drop you a note since I'm paying NYC a visit next week and was wondering if I could stop by New Rochelle to see how you guys do it up there. I'll be around from Sunday to Wednesday--give me a shout!

peace in,

Yes, I added it yesterday after we spoke. Thank you for telling me about it, because it seems much easier to use this blog than the one I was trying to use!

Hi Janelle! I love the website what a great idea! Unfortunately my summer will be spent at home and not in India like I'd like it to be. Hope all is well with you!
