I would definitely recommend the program in Ayacucho, Peru. The homeplace is very inviting, and much more homey than anything I could have imagined. The health clinics that you work at really need a lot of help. While I was there, a Doctor's strik...

Hello Jacob! I just got back from Ayacucho and I volunteered at the health clinic for 3 weeks. It was an amazing experience, but I do have some suggestions for you in order for you to make the most of your time there. I would definitely work on m...

I volunteered for 4 weeks at the Bondeni clinic in Moshi, Kilimanjaro. I am a registered nurse. I didn't feel like my skills were very useful because of the language barrier. The "mama" of the clinic that spoke English very well was on vacation th...

I'm also applying for a volunteer position in health care. I've looked at some of the programs available in other areas, but I chose Guatemala City, because the only area of concentration available there is health, so they cater to those opportuni...

Hi Jacob! I saw your comment on the Ayacucho group section. If you contact a CCS Program Enrollment Manager, they'll be able to connect you with a CCS alum who has worked in the health clinics. Here's the number at CCS: 800-380-4777.

If you have no formal medical training that should be fine, there still might be a placement available to you in some sort of clinic or pharmaceutical dispensiary. CCS just really tries to match you to a placement that you want and that you are suitable for, so if you say that you are really interested in medical clinics etc. then they will try to match you there if there is somewhere available. On the other hand if there are 10 people who are going at the same time as you who are nurses or doctors and want that type of placement they might get it over you. But from what I know, saw, and heard, CCS is very flexible, if you are completely unhappy with your placement they will work to change it before you go or at the actual volunteer house if you give it a week and hate it they will try to work with you on doing something else. I myself stayed in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. When you arrive in that region there are two CCS houses, one is in the village of Karanga and one is closer to the city Moshi. Both houses have similar placements because they are only about a 15 min. drive away from one another. So there wasn't specifically one medical clinic in the Kilimanjaro region that people were placed at, instead there were a variety of clinics, hospitals, dispensiaries etc. So the people I was talking about at the clinics and hospitals would be the possible types of positions you would have if you filled out all of your placement forms saying you were interested in working in a medical clinic.

Hi Jacob,

Thank you for your message! It's great to hear that you're thinking of volunteering with CCS - and absolutely, I'd be happy to answer any questions that you or your parents have.

To start, I thought I'd pass along my contact information. You can email me at emma@crossculturalsolutions.org or call me at 1.800.380.4777. I don't always get my CCS Community messages right away, so this will probably be the easiest (and quickest!) way to get a hold of me.

We have many alumni that would love to share their experiences with you, and I would be happy to put you in touch. We also have a representative available at our office in Toronto, if you and your parents would like to meet with him. His name is Kevin, and you can reach him at kevin@crossculturalsolutions.org to arrange a meeting.

Feel free to send me an email or give me a call, and I'd be happy to answer any other questions that you have as you are going along. I look forward to being in touch!
