Hi Elizabeth, I had the best time ever in Guatemala. Although I have traveled a lot before, this was my first CCS program and I consider it to be the best trip I've ever made. You'll feel like at home at the home base, the staff is simply incredible. My placement was great as well, I got really attached to some of the kids there. About free time, while in Guatemala, there were so many things to do that 1 week was not enough for me. I would suggest Antigua Guatemala (abt 45 min to 1hr from the Capital) which can be done in one day. Lake Atitlan is a little farther away and is a great weekend trip. There's also hiking an active volcano which I heard is the best (can be done in 1 free afternoon if you leave early enough). I see you're going for 3-4 wks which should give you plenty of time to explore it all. Tikal is another place you must visit during one of the weekends (kind of costly though). I purchased the book Guatemala by Moon and it was very helpful while there. When you get there, Virginia is great at giving advices about places to visit so ask away. Do me a favor, give her a big hug for me :) In regards to clothes, I just got back and it was really warm and humid, although the women there dont normally wear shorts. In order not to call lots of attention I would suggest Jeans and tennis shoes. While at the home base, shorts are ok, but when going out, especially around Guate City, I highly suggest pants.
Hope you have a wonderful time and let me know if I can answer anything else for you :)

Hi Elizabeth, Yes it was great, I was there for 2 weeks and only had one weekend there, so 5 of us went to Tikal for the weekend and it was fabulous. Some of my fellow volunteers, (there were 7 of us) who were there longer went to Lake Atitlan and also Antigua and they loved it. I don't think you will have much trouble at weekends because everyone is in the same situation and you will all probably end up doing stuff together. I do not speak Spanish but did try to learn like you with CD's etc, but unfortunately am not that good although I did pick up a few words..I managed to communicate at the orphanage with hand gestures, don't worry you will be fine...only two of the others spoke Spanish when I was there. Hope you have a great time, it is a wonderful experience.

Hi Elizabeth, I was in Guatemala City in Feb 2009 for two weeks, I absolutely loved every minute of my experience and was sad to leave. I was quite frightened before I left home, I suppose it is fear of the unknown...but once there I felt so at home. Virginia and all the staff at homebase are fabulous and very friendly, Virginia is like a second mother to everyone:) My placement was at Marina Guirola which is a home for children with disabilities - the kids there are great and I miss them very much. I have no doubt that you will have a fabulous experience and look forward to hearing how you get on. Regards, Jennifer
