I'm new to this site, and it looks like this conversation was awhile back, but I would also very strongly recommend Ladakh. You can get buses or jeeps to there from Manali. It is a little bit of a journey; not something you could do over a weekend...

About me:: I'm a third year international relations major at Mount Holyoke College. I am recently returned from a semester of study at the American University in Beirut, and am returning there this summer as a Red Cross intern!
