Profile Information

About me:
Hi everyone,
I was a volunteer with CCS in 2007 in Delhi. I worked in different projects linked to the Vidya NGO ( this for six months)but mostly concentrated my time in Pappankalan- which is an impoverished area in West Delhi. I have returned in 2008 and 2009 to pursue my work on the same project where I intiated a program in vocational skills for women and teenage girls. So far, all has been going really well and the women have made great improvements with their sewing-embroidery skills. I have also recruited two teachers for the continuity of this project. I also have conducted two programs with kids which has given them the possiblities of being linked with classrooms in Canada. They now have their own pen-pals and all are really excited to be in conctact through mail once in while. I have also been involve through the request of CCS India in guiding and sharing my own experiences with all the new groups coming to Delhi.
Look forward to continue sharing my thoughts, experiences and ideas with you.

Delhi, I'm back

After the never-ending trip from Canada to Delhi I finally arrived a week of so ago. After leaving Brazil, I had to process it all, leaving my street kids, my teacher, my friends and moving on. I guess over the years this had been what my life was about, a series of goodbyes and new start-ups! Arriving at Del… Continue

Tchau Brasil !

Tchau Brasil

This week is my last week in Brazil as I head now to India to continue my work. Must say this country grew on me. Initially the challenge of the language was quite something but then again I got myself into my books, found a great teacher and just learned the lingo.
Then, I had the pr… Continue

My name is Thiago, and I’m a “favelado”

What is a favela? First of all the origin of the word is Portuguese and referring to fava beans. I can hear you say what do favelas have to do with fava beans? Well, if you split open a fava bea… Continue

You're in Delhi!? How frickin' wonderful. I am so envious. I have settled for the time being and that isn't at all bad. Home is always home. I have not sold the lake house and actually, I am glad that it didn't go - well, both glad and sad because the freedom of only having one house would be immense, but I was there today and I really do love that place - just not to live there 12 months of the year. The kids and grandkids are coming at the end of October to help me put the house to bed for the winter - take the dock out of the water, get everything winterized. That will be a ball - good food, good company and lots of hard work and, of course, some good wine to wash it all down with!

I need a Delhi fix. It isn't as easy to just up and leave now that I have a partner who is a little more fixed than I am. I am planning on taking a Teach English as a Second Language course to give me some confidence that I can teach - but also to put some structure into the teaching so that the kids actually get something out of it in the long run - some advancement, rather than colouring or learning the same basics every three weeks or so. I think the course is offered next spring at the University here in Kamloops.

A whole year - I can hardly imagine what that will be like for you. A great deal of advancement, is likely, isn't it?

How are you? Are you well?

Lots of love, Cathy

I would so like to be doing something in India.

Hi Daniel,
As always you're a constant on here and I love you for it. You keep me connected to my goals and always inspire me to do more. I am starting to think about the end of my MSc and what I want to do long term. As much as I lobe the NHS and enjoy helping people here at home in the UK I don't get the same feeling I did in Delhi. Who knows I may be asking you for ideas in a years time. I hope you are keeping well and I know you are living life to the max as always!
Lots of love,
Shashana

Hello Daniel,

"Main theek hu"...lol
Sorry for replying late, but it was so nice to receive your message, and yes, I have seen your profile about your involvement with the children, it is so inspiring to find you involved in something like this.
I am a newbie to this in here, so looking forward to do some volunteer work that spreads the good message all around.
Hope to keep in touch.

Best Regards,
Arijit

Hi Daniel- My time in Delhi generally and Pappankalan specifically was amazing. It was a very powerful experience. It is my intention to go back but unsure in what capacity and when. I have a son who is interested in doing "something" (working, volunteering, teaching) in South America next year. I'd be interested to hear if you have specific suggestions. Thanks! Cindy

Hi Daniel!
I actually went to Brazil in November. I've put together a little video from our travels. You can find it here: http://gallery.me.com/trell#100146

I also have a page of photos (be patient, there are a lot of widgets on the page and it loads slowly) http://web.mac.com/trell/Trell/Blog/Entries/2008/11/21_Brazil_-_November_2008.html

Daniel: yes...maybe someday. There are just so many places in the world I want to visit and that includes India (but different areas as well in that very diverse world). Right now I am job hunting and getting finances in order so that I might some day be able to travel again... take care.

(For what we are about to receive may the lord take us away from our misery)

Hi everyone,

After months doing all sorts of things, assisting to my first Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, visiting the colonial town of Paraty, assessing development projects, and more projects and more projects, I’m taking a pause to write a little to my friends of CCS.
We have just entered autumn here in Brazil. Slowly it’s getting colder, of course nothing in comparison to where I’m from (Canada) but then again when you have been living here for a while even the slightest drop in temperature make a difference.
Life in Sao Paulo as regained its full swing. Prior to Carnival, the country is at a stand still. Nothing really moves, quietness in a city the size of this one is almost unbelievable but you do see the difference.
I’m really enjoying my time in Sao Paulo. At the same time, I feel very connected to my project in India and have been receiving regular notes from Indu in the community as well as gift and letters from the kids. Not a day goes by that I don’t have a thought for them. I even have place a photo of the class and the women in the room where I work. In Brazil, I didn’t get the chance to connect to a community in the same way and I guess that is simply because my work hasn’t been solely focused on one community but on many. Still, I have had the chance to experience and nourish myself from the work of so many organisations that do great work over here. Thanks to them! In the end, what I go home with every night is the conviction that whether it is Brazil, India, Guatemala, Indonesia or Nepal, (to name but those where I’ve worked) problems are similar. Needs are great and the more I do this work the more I realize the importance of education above all. Taking the time to teach, to share tools and knowledge is crucial. Whitney Houston sang some years ago lyrics that transpires the full scope and importance of giving out at an early age and permitting kids to become the leaders of tomorrow. For all the kids I meet here in Brazil that is what I wish for them.
I have discovered here in Brazil, the work of Mr. Gregory J. Smith, who’s the director of CARF organisation for street kids. This man is truly amazing, an inspiration. If you get the chance to peruse the CARF flickr PHOTOS http://www.flickr.com/photos/beija-flor/
and website, http://www.carfweb.net/
I am sure you will enjoy.

“I believe that children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be”

Bom Dia Daniel! Tudo e voce?
I had the most amazing time of my life! Brazil is such a beautiful country! Even with all the poverty, I completely admire the life that everyone leads! It's so simple and that's reality. I was working with children aged 2-3 and sometimes 4, and I would of loved to have taken them all home with me. hehe. I am actually trying to somehow, someway move to Brazil, I read your profile and how you live there now, do you have any information that you could provide to help me out? I am going back to Volunteer Dec 12 but I would love to be able to work in Brazil, in Salvador and eventually get residency, or just be able to live there for a while. Any information would be much appreciated! oh...and if you could help me with my portuguese, it seems like you are really good at the language! haha :) Tchau! Muito Obrigada!

Hi! I appreciate your comment. I have not been a volunteer before but I would love to be one. Do you have any tips? I'm not sure how volunteering really works. What I know, for sure, is I want to help young people by liberating them from the bondage of illiteracy.
