Hi, Jonathan. I am a two-time alumni of CCS Russia. I too, was a bit stricken by the price. It's an expensive program, no doubt about it. I am a working-class person, and I had to save money for probably about a year before I volunteered the first...

Hey All! We've been looking at CCS, and it just looks REALLY expensive for what we can see it is. I know this is a common theme and I have read the FAQ on the CCS website about why people pay to volunteer. We feel like we could do the same and ...

Yeah, CCS is probably more useful for inexperienced travellers. Not sure how you would achieve a solid chunk of volunteering by arriving unannounced without the use of an in-country agency. I might consider shopping around for prices at other agencies before I signed up again, but then again, they’d have to offer the same sort of in-depth support.

If time isn't a problem, then you'll probably want to judge based on how much you think you might enjoy the local culture in your destination. How different a culture from your own do you think you can stand to live in for a month? Personally, I like going as far from my home-culture as possible, but you might want to start off (if this is your first big adventure) in a country that at least speaks a European-based language. I just read some good advice in "The Practical Nomad" by Edward Hasbrouck. He says you should read the opening chapters of lots of different travel guidebooks (Frommers, Lonely Planet, Fodors, Rough Guide, etc.). The guide books can even be out of date, because the cultural data doesn't change much, so scrounge up some old guide books at a library or used book store. Sooner or later one will really grab your imagination.

Have you chosen a place to volunteer yet? A one-week stay is awfully short so you better stick close to home, say somewhere in central America. We loved Costa Rica. If you have some spare time, the cloud forest is beautiful and Montezuma is a really laid-back beach town. You better like humidity though.
