I worked with the kids at esperanza and it was the best three-week vacation ever. Thinking about going back. Guatemala is my favorite country to visit.

Hey all! Just got back this morning from the 1 week Insight program in Guatemala City. I had an incredible time and wish I could have spent more time there. Its hard to find words to describe the feelings. Virginia and the staff at the home base are simply the best! All of them!
My placement was at Mama Carmen. Anyone looking for updates on the kids, please send me a message as our group spent some quality time with quite a few of them :)
An update to the spanish question from Simon, you don't need to speak it but if you do, it will help you at your placement as well as during your free time traveling. So if you speak it its a plus, if you dont, that should not matter!

Spanish is not required but I recommend you do your best to learn at least some Spanish basics before you go. Barely anyone in Guatemala speaks English, including at your volunteer sites!

No, my program manager told me that Spanish is only a requirement if you will be working in the health clinic. Other volunteer sites in Guatemala City do not require Spanish. I am going August 22 with my husband for the 1 week (insight) program. Hoping to meet some of you there!

Thinking of enrolling in the fall for an insight program. Can anyone tell me whether fluent Spanish is a requirement?

Thank you for that update Phillipa, it's so good to hear how the kids are getting on....I was sad to leave too. It is a fabulous place and I miss the kids a lot. Guatemala is such a beautiful country, I hope to return there one day.

Hey,
So I'm into my last week out of six in Guatemala city. I don't want to leave!! My main placement is at Santa Sofia de Jesus Educational especial, but some afternoons I like to visit the kids at Marina Guirola. I love those darling children. Gerrado is a lot bigger now, and I usually play football with him and Gevi, and drwa with julio, Gaby, cecy and cindy. I hope other volunteers continue to visit them in the afternoons because otherwise they don't have much to do.

Thank you Lauren, When were you at Marina Guirola? Gerardo looks such a wee cutie in this photo, he is quite a bit bigger now ... Anyone who happens to be at this placement please let me know how the kids are getting on :)
