Hi, I'm considering volunteering in Ayacucho in the health clinics. Is there anyone who volunteered there who could tell me about his or her experience?
Thanks!

Hello Jacob!

I just got back from Ayacucho and I volunteered at the health clinic for 3 weeks. It was an amazing experience, but I do have some suggestions for you in order for you to make the most of your time there. I would definitely work on my Spanish because you will understand what the doctors are doing a lot better. I definitely struggled with that due to my horrible Spanish. The doctors are very helpful and are willing to explain the patients’ symptoms and diagnosis to you. I would also bring latex gloves, hand sanitizer and pay close attention to how the doctors complete patient evaluations because they will expect you to perform patient evaluations. I also had the opportunity to volunteer at the laboratory and found that to be very rewarding because I was able to do virtually every test. I would really encourage working at the health clinics especially if you are interested in health. Take Care!
