I'll be traveling to Ayacucho at the end of June. Does anyone have any advice on what to do or see there?

Hi Amy!

I am thrilled to hear that you will be visiting Ayacucho. I participated in the Cross-Cultural Solutions Ayacucho program, so I am happy to provide you with first hand information.
There are many things to do and see in the area. First of all, I highly recommend a llama trek. This can be arranged in Ayacucho, and will cost approximately 100.00 US dollars. Here is a direct link to a web-site that will provide you with further information: http://www.morochucos.com/ingles/static.php?page=static060926-104825
During your evening free time, you can explore Ayacucho. There are many local cafes, artisan markets, museums, and also some discos. It is a beautiful city, so make sure you have plenty of space on your memory card for pictures!
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me directly. I can be reached at 800-380-4777 ext 1166 between the hours of 9AM-6PM pacific time. If you prefer email, you can contact me at kara@crossculturalsolutions.org.

Best,

Go on ALL the trips you can with Pancho, the guy's amazing. You won't be bored. How long are you staying, and will you be doing any other travelling in Peru? I'd be happy to offer suggestions!

If you work out, there is a nice gym just about 4 blocks away. Marisol can tell you where it is. I thought that i would run in the mornings, but with all the stray dogs, I thought better of it.

Here are some websites to get you started on your research and planning:

Pancho organizes several weekend trips for volunteers: http://www.morochucos.com/ingles/

Viajes en Ayacucho!!

Llama Trek:

Cost: $80 if there is a group of 5+, $120 if under 5 people

Days of placement missed: Zero

Incan Ruins/Waterfalls:

Cost: Depends on number of people on the trip/type of accommodation. Generally $60-100 per person

Days of placement missed: Zero

Jungle Trip:

Cost: $120-150 depending on group size

Days of placement missed: One

Coast Trip:

Cost: Depends on number of people on the trip/type of accommodation. Generally $170-250 per person

Days of placement missed: One or two

Cuzco/Machu Picchu:

Cost: Depends on number of people/type of accommodations. Generally $160-280 per person

Days of placement missed: One or two

Pancho can also plan trips elsewhere. If volunteers want to travel, you can wait until you get to Ayacucho and then plan your trips through Pancho. You generally do not need to give a lot of notice unless you want to do the Inca Trail during the summer months. In that case, you should plan ~ 3 months ahead of time. Pancho can also help get reduced airfare.

Are the dogs really that bad? I like to run/cycle, but I'm not much of a gym fan...

Hi Amelia, I was in Ayacucho a few months ago. There were members from our group who would go for a run - some early in the a.m. before breakfast, but most in the afternoons once we were back. The morning runners did get chased a bit by the dogs, but no bites or attacks. The afternoon runners just had to deal w/ the crowds & traffic and people staring at them :)

I'm volunteering in Ayacucho this month and was wondering what the internet situation was like. I'm a little worried about paying my bills while I'm gone - is it reasonable to assume I will be able to log online and take care of those sorts of things? Is there an internet cafe nearby? Thanks!

There are several internet cafes just steps away from the home base in Ayacucho. Internet service is very cheap and I found it to be relatively fast. You should have no trouble taking care of your bill paying from there.
