Which country/location would you recommend for the health care program?

Hi Jacob,

I definitely recommend the Ayacucho, Peru program and the Gualtemala programs. They have the most placements available in hospitals and clinics. You will also find those types of volunteer settings in Ghana and Tanzania, but not as many as Ayacucho or Guatemala.

I haven't done any of these programs myself, so I don't have any first hand experience. Does anyone else have an experience as a health volunteer or health intern they would like to share?

I'm also applying for a volunteer position in health care. I've looked at some of the programs available in other areas, but I chose Guatemala City, because the only area of concentration available there is health, so they cater to those opportunities and the other volunteers there are likely to share the same interests. If you want to guarantee your placement in health care, I'd also suggest going through Intern Abroad. As an intern, you are guaranteed your preferred area of concentration, as long as the site you choose has it available.

I would definitely recommend the program in Ayacucho, Peru. The homeplace is very inviting, and much more homey than anything I could have imagined. The health clinics that you work at really need a lot of help. While I was there, a Doctor's strike was in progress and really amped up the need for help. I was able to assist and perform many procedures that even a 3rd year Med student wouldn't be able to do in the States. Just take super initiative while you're there and the physicians and nurses will learn to trust you, and eventually lean on you. Lots of responsibility at times, but definitely a great window into 2nd World Health Care. LEARN QUECHUA. haha. Good Luck!
