Hi my name is Liz and I will be volunteering in Cartago, Costa Rica in June 2009. I was just wondering if anyone else will be volunteering there at the same time as me? Feel free to contact me I would love to connect with other prospective volunteers. :-)

Hi Julie,
I am sure Nataline will tell you your placement on Monday. She was off this past week so I am sure she will take care of it when she gets back. Are you going to write a blog during your trip? I would love to hear about your experience! I am also interested in hearing about where you will be placed. Have a wonderful time! My husband, son and I went to CR in January for vacation and it was amazing. I am sure you will love it there! Please keep us posted on your experience!

Hi Julie,
Yes, I'm hoping to write a blog while I'm away - I think it'll be a great way to keep track of my experiences - I'll also update here when I find out my placement, hopefully tomorrow! Can't believe that I'll be in Costa Rica next week around this time....it's been a long time coming and I'm very excited!

Hello all,
Well, I got my placement information today!! I'll be working at Hogar Nuestra Senora de la Esperanza, which is a transitional shelter caring for people living with HIV/AIDS. There are around 18 residents, and I'll be helping out with the residents as well as working around the home doing housekeeping duties and assisting the staff with whatever they need. I'm very excited - a little nervous too, but so looking forward to this new and challenging experience. I leave in 5 days!!! Julie

Wow Julie that is so exciting!!!! I am so happy for you.

I'm sure you will have a wonderful time. Have you begun packing? What kind of things did Nataline tell you to take with you?

Let me know!

Liz

Hi Liz!
Great to hear from you - I have started putting things together to pack. Basically it seems that "casually appropriate" is the dress code - jeans are definitely okay, as are T-shirts with no inappropriate slogans. I'm planning on taking a couple of pairs of jeans, and like to wear capris, so will be taking a few pair of those as well. T-shirts are fine with me, and for my free time, I'll plan on taking some more summery-type tops. Since I'll be there 2 weeks and will have a free weekend, I'm hoping to get a group together to maybe go to the coast (Manuel Antonio National Park) near Quepos, or somewhere I can go zip lining - that's definitely on my list of things to do!! Rainwear and a warm coverup of some kind is also recommended, since it sometimes rains and apparently can get a little cool at night. For footwear, I'm taking flip flops for wandering around the home base, and will take my Tevas and another pair of closed toed comfy shoes (maybe tennis shoes too - I haven't decided yet) for working at my placement. It sounds like a lot, but I'm trying to keep things as compact as possible, since I hate lugging heavy stuff around airports......Hope this helps a little - Nataline's open to questions and suggestions, so you should definitely feel free to call her if you have anything you'd like to ask!! Take care, Julie
