CCS Community

Everyone has a personal motivation for participating in a CCS program or a keen interest in a particular program. If you could start a CCS Volunteer Program anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I've always wondered why CCS doesn't have a program in Mexico, especially with it's proximity to the US. I figure there must be some reason for it?

I also was wondering about Mexico but I do not know enough about the country to say why it should or should not have a CCS site. However, I think a site in the Caribbean would be a great placement choice. I know Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica are all in need of humanitarian services but I am not sure to what extent and whether CCS could cater to the country's needs.

Hi Laura,
Further to many years of travelling I have some ideas of where CCS could maybe think of having some programs.
First on my list, would be Nepal. Now that the situation is changing rapidly overthere I believe that Nepal is in great need of humanitarian workers. It is a fantastic country and so much to discover at all levels. Education for girls and young women, health awareness programs, reaching out to rural areas, all sectors that could be adress through diverse programs.
Second, for having worked in Indonesia for several years, Jakarta has one of the largest population living below poverty line in the world. The slums of Jakarta are overwhelming and great needs are also there. Other islands are also in need for their lack of facilities, materials, infrastructures etc. Places like Bali, Sulawesi, Borneo etc are fantastic but again the situation in some sectors are in great need of support from International organisations such as CCS. Caring for infants, phsysically challenged and intellectually challenged, environment issues all domains in need of foreign help.

I do believe it is important to open some programs elsewhere but then again, extending programs to other cities in countries where you are already could help deepening the experience and support CCS is already providing to particular sector of intervention in that country.

For something completly different, Canada is already offering through different organisations programs with young Inuits in the north but then again CCS could think about developping something overthere that would permit some form of intervention in focuses sectors. Volunteers could participate in suicide prevention programs, drug abuse programs, illiteracy and health awareness programs which are all issues being faced by theses communities. Again I believe there is a lot to be learned and shared with them.

I could go on and on but then again I understand that logistically not all possible for all sort of reasons linked to the organisation or the country itself.

Anyway, this is just food for thoughts.... all the best. D.

Thanks for the responses. These are all great ideas! How exciting to hear about other experiences abroad, especially in communities where CCS volunteers could potentially work with local initiatives. We will keep your ideas on file, and they will be forwarded to our Executive Team who oversees program development. A number of factors are considered when deciding to expand in additional countries, including safety and infrastructure in the host country, volunteer demand, and the ability to develop relationships with a qualified Country Director. Keep your ideas coming! It's great to hear about regions of world that interest our volunteers.

Nepal & more remote parts of China would be of interest. Iceland & Alaska programs that involve social/community/orphanage type work (instead of conservation) would be great. I've been to Dharamsala, Ayacucho, San Carlos & Moshi with CCS...Without repeating, I am beginning to exhaust CCS locations of interest for me...specifically more remote countryside locations as opposed to city ones I find most appealing. Your programs are great, please let me know as you add new locations.

Nepal. I actually found another program that does work through Nepal but I'd rather do it with CCS so I am waiting and hoping that they'll add it.
